Outreach

The Reformed Church of Syracuse provides many programs and services to the community.

Church programs include:

Food Pantry: We reach out to our community through support of the food pantry at Blessed Sacrament Church, and currently the Reformed Church of Syracuse has emergency food bags for infants and families that suddenly find themselves unable to provide a meal for their families.

CROP Walk: The Reformed Church of Syracuse participates annually in the DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE CROPWALK. The 2011 walk will take place in Sunday, October 16 beginning at 2 pm at Columbus Circle. The walk takes about one hour to complete. Everyone is invited to either walk or sponsor a walker. Why not do both?! All walkers should get a sponsor envelope from Rachel Netzband and then ask friends and family to pledge to support. 25% of all monies raised are returned to the Interreligious Food Consortium on Teall Avenue in Syracuse.

School Supply Collection: Each year the Reformed Church of Syracuse holds a school supply drive for a local neighborhood school. In September 2011, our collection will benefit Salem-Hyde School, which is a Pre-K through 6th grade Syracuse City school. These are very challenging economic times for some families and with the need to supply food, shelter and clothes there is sometimes simply not enough money left for back-to-school supplies. By working together with the teachers of Salem-Hyde, RCS was able to donate the following items: pencils, colored pencils, pens, binders, paper, notebooks, composition books, rulers, scissors, calculators, construction paper, crayons, coloring books, picture books, stickers, activity books, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and classroom games.

Refugee Support: We work with the sponsorship of refugees through the Center for New Americans and LARCS, our Wednesday afternoon tutoring program for Middle School refugee youth. Currently the RCS is collecting towels, linens, curtains and dressers for the Center for New Americans.

LARCS: LARCS stands for Learning At the Reformed Church of Syracuse. For many years it has been focused on middle school children and as of late has really focused on refugees. The 2011-2012 school year will see many changes for LARCS as an entity of its own, and it will also file for not-for-profit status. Our intent is to broaden the scope of LARCS to include learning for people of all ages. We will not be limited by age or by country of origin. This change will allow RCS to dream and plan big!

Habitat for Humanity Bowl-a-thon:  For at least the past six years, the Reformed Church of Syracuse has been well-represented at the S.W.E.A.T. for Habitat Bowl-a-thon. This annual fundraiser supports local Habitat for Humanity building projects. Habitat for Humanity hab been active in building many, many homes in Syracuse for people who never dreamed that they could own a home. The money raised at the Bowl-a-thon stays right here in Syracuse! Last year our bowlers raised over $700. Watch for announcements about 2012's Winter Bowl-a-thon and plan to bowl with us!
